HI, looking for some advice. I'll start by telling the story for sympathy vote. I lent my tent to some students doing d of e where i work. they tripped over a guy rope and ripped a massive chunk of the flysheet away (~ 30cm*20cm.) i have the piece still but obviously not a perfect neat tear.
Its a decent albeit old Mountain hardwear trango 2.
I just want it to be useable again and waterproof so looked at commercially available patches etc.. most seem quite small patches and i've seen some tape you can use that can be sealed down.
If a chunk like that came off from tripping over a guy rope I would suspect the fabric has been degraded by UV light and maybe it's time to get a new tent. a sad fact with of life for modern tents. My much loved Phoenix Phortress went the same way this year RIP (literally).
In reply to Mattyk: scottish mountain gear and attwools woud be good people to ask. I've had repairs done by both of them in the past, and both were done to a high standard.
I'd tell them to go get some gaffer tape and fix it. Say you want it gaffer taped both inwards and outwards and stitched through. Does an ok job and it'll take them an hour during which they can think about what they have done
If the tent is worth it I'd send it to Lancashire sports repair, if you are handy with a sewing machine you could fix it yourself.
I'd fix it myself, buy some material from point north and fit a patch to the inside double stitching everything and using good polyester thread. Then seal all the edges and seams with seam grip/storm seal urethane sealant.
Hi .. Some tw@t cut a metre long gash in my new Helium tent a while ago repaired it with these .. I have used it in the Lakes since i repaired it and its being great ..
