I'm thinking about undertaking a hitchhiking trip across Europe this summer, I'd like to spend a few days climbing but obviously carrying gear is gonna be a bit of a challenge, anyone had experience doing something similar or have any words of wisdom to add about what gear you can get away with borrowing/without?

In reply to alexkitts:
Have done it extensively in the nineties with close to everything - climbing & camping equipment including trad gear, ice axes, crampons & food for a week - some 40+ kgs all across the alps, to norway, the pyrenees ... some 100000km alltogether.

Take a girlfriend with you, makes hitching so much easier in every respect ...
Lots of time and select a few venues where you do not need transport.

Worst experience: being stranded close to barcelona for 9 hours. Best lift: salzburg directly to chamonix, first car. You never know.

And enjoy!
