are they much use? I can see them giving some protection against water falling through an icefall but was wondering if they are up to much in snow.

Never had any problems with mine, I don't use normal gaiters anymore.

They seem to do the trick, especially using trousers with built in gaitors which can be tucked inside the phantoms gaitor. Tested twice, once when I fell in a bog up to my knees, and again when I accidently measured the depth of the river below the cic hut with my legs. Feet remained dry which is more than could be said for other parts of my body.
