I'm heading to the alps in September. Originally planning chamonix, but am now reading all of the snow routes are in bad condition. I prefer ice and snow, so just wondering if there are better places in the alps. I've been to zermatt before, so if the italian side of monte rosa is in good condition, i'd prefer there.

Gran Paradiso?
Weissmies?
Capanna Margherita?
Castor?

Also is it easy to get back to geneva from staffal?

In reply to owenel: I can only speak for the Valais and it's OK here. Most easy snow routes still in, we did the Nadelgrat the other day, dry but in. Various major rock fall hazards though. We did Jegihorn earlier in week and could see nobody going up Weissmies but there is a track apparent.

Will be possible but icier tan normal. Use VE hut route rather than Chabod as fewer crevasses

As of last week, crevassed glacier but possible.

Grand Combin from Valsorey hut is fine if you like 1200m of choss.

By public transport?Bus to Pont St Martin. Then bus or train to Aosta, then buses to Chamonix, then Alpybus or similar. Allow a day. Driving is easy.
