i want to thank all the contributors who provided advice at http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=587441

having read it, can anyone explain why no one makes a midlayer with pitzips? wouldn't that give you the warmth of primaloft gold and an approximate "breathability" of polartec alpha? that way i don't have to keep both a patagonia nanopuff for the casual jaunt and a rab strata for ski season.

or if someone does have a recommendation, pray advise.

There's this bad boy http://scottishmountaineer.com/first-look-mammut-marangun/ Although, it's overkill for a midlayer.
In reply to 2powern:

That's an insulated waterproof shell. Certainly not what I'd call a 'mid layer'...

In reply to captain paranoia:

Very true, hence me calling it overkill.
It was the only thing I could think of that would combine the warmth of primaloft gold (albeit Mammut's own brand) with pit zips.

I sometimes use a down vest if that is any help. It keeps my core warm without overheating me.

Paramo mountain vent pull on - is this the sort of thing you had in mind?
