Five Ten Verdon, 3 kb

Five Ten's hotly-anticipated new shoe, the Verdon, is about to hit the shelves here in the UK. This is our stiffest and pointiest shoe in the range. Tom Randall, Pete Whittaker & Ethan Walker have already sent routes up to 8C+ wearing them. The word on the street; They're better than the, now retired, Blanco's!

You are hanging around on the wrong street. Take a look at the rounded sole and compare it to the flat sole of the the Blanco's. How is that an improvement for micro-edges. The Whites are still the weapon of choice for the discerning at Raven Tor, Malham and also Slate (apparently). It disgusts me still that five ten withdrew them without an equivalent or superior replacement.

Five Ten could be a case of history repeating itself.

Late 1980's. The green Asolo Runout was the footwear of choice for high standard climbing.

Asolo changed to the Orange Runouts without any overlap with Green.

So have we been here before?

Off the top of my head, the top dog rockboot manufacturer over the years was EB then Boreal Asolo Five Ten, who's next?

I'm just happy the Quantum also came back.

I think it is a deliberate move by Five Ten/Adidas rather than an accidental one. The White is a specialist boot highly valued by a small but very committed segment of the climbing community. They want world sellers and the Whites don't fit their marketing plan. Obviously this is my speculative opinion, not fact.... but I'm rarely wrong .

You are probably correct.

FWIW I reckon the UK market will be dominated by Sportiva Scarpa Ocun or a resurgent Boreal over the next few years.

and I am often wrong

In reply to Rick Graham:

The shoe that I had more pairs of than any other either before or since was the black and green Boreal Aces. When they changed that to the maroon version they lost the plot. My current favourite is Miura lace ups but I'm only on my second pair.

Are you from Tunbridge Wells?

In reply to GridNorth:

Have you stocked up on them?

I must confess to having at least a lifetime stock of spare boots.

Might need to mention them in my will

No climber would willingly exile themselves to Tunbridge Wells

Pictures of Tom Randall on his latest route at Ilam Rock show both Blancos and Verdons. I wonder what he wore on the actual ascent.

Steve Mcclure still wears Blancos:

As shark says, you must talk to the wrong people. The word on my street is Verdons are a bit shit.
