Hi,

Going to be out in Girona for a few days in January.

Was hoping to get a couple of days climbing in, -preferably some long winter mountain routes. Pena Foratata looks good, but is a bit of a trip from Girona.

Does anyone have any tips for winter climbing in the eastern Pyrenees?

Cheers

Tom

Tom, send me a private email and i will give you a copy of some of the topos from the local guide book to the eastern pyrenees. The nearest mountains to Girona that will hold snow are the Canigou massif, probably best accessed from the south from the Vall de Terr ski station but it is quite a drive. There is a refuge at the ski station which may be the best option. The main peaks are Gra de Fajol Gran & Petit and are quickly accessed from the ski station. At the moment there is not a huge amount of snow and the temps have been high during the day. The eastern pyrenees do not in general hold ice, especially early season but easy gullies/ridges can be good fun. from home I can see the ridge-line just to the west of the Canigou and like the routes in Scotland, it does look a bit "thin"
Personally I would bring the rock gear and go to Montserrat.
