Much higher than Hanging Knotts above Angle Tarn is a prominant knoll on the north spur of Bowfell. By passed by the track from Ore Gap this knoll is cairned and distinct from the summit of Bowfell Buttress - does anyone know of a local name? Perhaps Bill Birkett knows, or perhaps the Langdale shepherds or local hunt have a name for this fantastic eyrie .... Jokingly with friends we coined our own ..."Dontellem Pike" ...which while consistent with the etymology of the Langdales is surely sacriledge.
Please help!

Ha, very good!

There doesn't seem to be a "proper" name for this - it's in hill lists as Bowfell North Top http://www.hill-bagging.co.uk/mountaindetails.php?qu=N&rf=2370

I've had a quick look on a very old OS Map.
I think the knoll that you're talking about is called Bland-e-mans Bluff on this map.
Hope that helps. There's some famous Blands that are fell runners in Cumbria. Perhaps their ancestors named it?

That's interesting can you tell me the OS Edition and publishing date - thanks.... or are you pulling my leg?

It's very worn but it's the old Outdoor Leisure Lake District South West, 1989.
The yellow coloured ones.

Thanks for getting the week off to a depressing start!
The oldest I've still got is from 1994, and that no longer gives a name to the north top.
The best resource I'm aware of for old maps is the National Library of Scotland - warning, can lead to many wasted hours!

According to the old 6 inch maps, it's called "Pile of Stones"
Unfortunately they haven't got as far as the north west of England yet in their ongoing digitalisation of the 25 inch series.

I think the Nuttalls refer to this top as Bowfell North Top

As if 1989 is very old!

The 1859-60 map just has it marked as pile of stones.
