The 13th edition of the Ice Climbing Festival will take place from 6 to 8 January 2012, in Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland. It will be held for the third year in a row on the "Eiskletterarena" frozen rock wall, across from the Gemmi Lodge. World class alpinist - Ueli Steck - inspires with "Speed Himalaya" the audience.
As a prelude to the ice climbing season, top Ice climbers, amateurs and absolute beginners will come together for this icy event. In addition to the open Ice Climbing contest, numerous workshops will be held on various topics related to ice climbing. Famous international Ice-climbers will also attend, to share their experience with the participants. Last but not least, on Saturday night, after the finale, the big Ice Climbing Party in the Gemmi Lodge is a must for participants and spectators alike.
The ice-covered rock wall across from the Gemmi Lodge has proven itself as a prime spot, over the last two years. In 2012, the wall will again be ringing with the sounds of picks and scraping spikes. The highlight of the festival will be the Ice Climbing contest on Saturday, with the finals taking place in the evening, under the floodlights: the "Eiskletterarena", the arena where Ice climbers compete against each other will again live up to its name.
As in previous years, international top-class ice-climbers from all over Europe will congregate to participate in the contest. Another highlight for athletes and audience will be the Skydive Show, taking place just before the semi-finals. Top climbers from the World Cup circuit will hold workshops for beginners and advanced, the sponsors providing the proper equipment.
In addition to the live show on the ice, internationally renowned athletes will show stunning images. On Friday evening, expert mountaineer Ueli Steck will present his illustrated lecture on "Speed Himalaya". On Saturday night, the two Mountainsports athletes Tim Emmett (UK), and Will Gadd (Canada) will thrill the audience with their spectacular images of the "Spray On" Ice-climbing route.
With over 600 ice climbers, spectators and visitors expected to participate, the annual Ice Climbing Festival is considered one of the largest international meetings of Ice-climbing fans in the Alps. The Ice Climbing Festival would not be possible without the support from our Sponsors, old and new, as well as our partners:
