Some of these events, like the Gower Climbing Festival, have been running for a number of years and have become regular fixtures on the BMC event calendar, while others, such as the Bristol Climbing Festival are happening for the very first time. But they’ve all got one thing in common; they are free to attend and open to everyone, not just BMC members. So what’s happening and when?
Stanage Festival (28-29 June)
Our summer festival season kicks off at one of Britain’s most iconic crags. Along its four-mile length, you can mingle with the masses at the ‘popular end’ or find seclusion on one of its lesser frequented buttresses. It’s also surrounded by great hill walking country, so there’s something for everyone.
Cornish Climbing Festival (4-6 July)
The festival will be based at the Count House, the Climbers’ Club hut above Bosigran. Golden granite, deep blue-green sea and some of the finest real ales in the country will be staples of the weekend. Whether you’re new to climbing or a seasoned sea cliff adventurer, come and spend a weekend in the company of local climbers and enjoy everything that West Penwith has to offer.
North East Climbing & Walking Festival (11-13 July)
Based in Wooler, gateway to the Cheviot Hills and the Northumberland National Park, and a short hop from the magical sandstone crags of Bowden and Kyloe, the festival will provide opportunities to climb, walk and socialise. You’ll definitely get a warm County welcome.
Bristol Climbing Festival (26 July)
Showcasing the unique urban crag that is Avon and the work of ClimbBristol (the Avon Gorge Climbing Regeneration Project), the festival activities will occupy a daytime basecamp under the Sea Walls section of the crag, and move to the Redpoint Climbing Centre for evening entertainment.
WiltonFest (6 September)
The inaugural 2013 festival held at the BMC-owned Wilton 1 Quarry in Lancashire attracted almost 100 keen climbers from near and far. Local volunteers have been busy planning to make this year even bigger and better. The quarry is in great condition, ready to entertain you with quality climbing.
Gower Climbing Festival (12-14 September)
Organised by the BMC's local team in South Wales, and now in its sixth year, the festival is well established in the BMC calendar for climbers from all over the UK. Festival HQ will once again be Pitton Cross Camping & Caravan Park in Rhossili.
Crag Lough Clean-up Festival (13 September)
Crag Lough sits immediately below Hadrian's Wall, and is one of Northumberland's finest low to mid-grade crags. The weekend will follow the format of previous clean-ups; Saturday will be spent cleaning routes, with an evening barbecue courtesy of the BMC, followed by beers in a local pub. On Sunday, you can enjoy climbing the newly cleaned routes.
