Follow the obvious ridge around starting from the footpath just East of Steall Falls and heading South and then West around the ridge. Be carefull on Descent as accidents can occur trying to descend ground in the Steall falls area.

Parts snow free but lots of good snow, axe still essential

went anti-clockwise; snow from about 550m was generally soft and knee deep (except on/just to the western side of the crests when it became thigh/waist deep in places). 60% sunshine, couple of light snow showers and rest of time was cloudy but still good visibility. Direct descent off An Gearanach was verging on treacherous despite being a (worn) path: should have left my crampons on for a bit longer!

Superb sunny day, if rather on the warm side! Mostly in summer nick with lots of soft wet snow, but needed crampons on the north ridge of Sgurr a'Mhaim and the descent from Am Bodach.

Ring of steall with Rob Stone and Warwick Anderson. Left steall hut around 10. Headed Sw through woods ascending, then scrambling over slippery snow covered slabs to gain NE ridge of sgurr a mhaim (1099m). Rain and low cloud so full waterproofs but not cold. On the summit sun briely came out and it got really hot, stripped down to thermals but this was short lived! Continued along ridge heading S to sgurr an lubhair (1001m). Good knife edge ridge walking, took it in turns to break trail through heavy snow. Continued SE to am bodach (1032m). descending Ne ridge required crampons due to slippy wet snow over hard ice layer. Continued along ridge to stob coire a chairn (981m) then over an garbhanach 975 and an gearanach 982. Careful navigation to box around the cliffs to the n on descent via the zig zags to the waterfall and hut. A great walk, shame mostly in cloud but good chance to practice navigation through a combination of compass, map, terrain, altimeter and gps grid refs. Winter hazards such as cornices to be mindful of, and avalanche hazard on ne to se slopes. Back for 6.30. 7.5 hrs, 12km.

What a trip! Hard snow ice in some very exposed situations. Met only one person all day; a lady and her dog doing the Ring. Totally relaxed!

3.20am alarm! Neil was a bit late, we missed Alex and Sarah initially and then Alex slipped on ice and had to turn back. So all-in-all a bit of a late start! Managed to navigate the ice on top of the bog rather than the bog itself at Steall. Neil mistakenly went through the river rather than over the bridge! Good paths on the way up and stunning sunlight everywhere, winds not too strong. Powdery all round but not deep. Cracking route. Brocken spectres on the summit of Stob Coire a Cairn! Brutal descent into the darkness from Sgurr a Mhaim and then a long walk back to the car, but great day.

A beautiful winter ridge walk with more 'sporty' bits & not just the Devil's Ridge section. Plenty of snow, blue sky and sun: more like the Biancograt than Scotland in winter. Could have used snow goggles as was seeing the world a bit pink after a while. A truly tremendous day out.

Big day out in limited day light but good fun! Helped rescue some walkers who had got stuck in the corrie too and they were rescued by helicopter.

Going clockwise. Had to turn back meters from the top of An Garbhanach. Wife not willing to suffer further exposure. The short down climb was bare and exposed and the east side covered in windslab. Not allowed to take wife home in a bag. However, beautiful day, blue skies and not much wind. Just nice to get out :-)
