The Pause*** E1 5b
[The slabs from the descent path, 3 kb]Please exercise caution climbing the first pitch as there was a substantial rock fall on Thursday 10/06/10. A large quantity of rock has slipped from the overlap below the first belay /heather ledge. The rockfall has also damaged the slab below(The Pause) Several of the flakes have been damaged on the first pitch slab, not sure whether the grade remains

Lead the first 3 pitches, backed off the easy 4th because of uncertainty about route description and finished up spartan slabs.

Lovely, runout but not too hard. Seepage on P1 led to a heathery diversion, but otherwise in perfect condition. Think the two 'small trees' mentioned in Latter's description are no more, the only remaining one is part way up P2, which is confusing. Also take care of the block at the top of the last corner, it has some movement in it..

Great climbing. Found it pretty easy, although on P5 went too far left and ended up on sketchy friction climbing on a blank slab, desperately trying to get back right to the groove. 20 metres above the belay with 2 shit pieces of gear both feet slipped; as I fell I managed to lunge for a crimp off right and caught it. Terrifying. Lovely top vertical corner pitch. Horrendous wet dark descent.

led 2, 4, 6. Slipped off seconding the downwards traverse into the crevasse on p3. For p4, the guidebook description was a bit confusing - where it says "faint line of cracks" after the 3m right traverse, it's more like a rut which goes a little way up, but finishes well before the overlap (behind which is the belay). You can then either head straight up the slab, or traverse left to another faint short groove which takes you a little higher before you have to move up the blank slab for a few moves to the overlap, and traverse round to the right to find the belay.

really nice. very consistent difficulty and all incredibly enjoyable. not really e1, just fairly spaced gear at times, hardest bit well protected. last (vertical) pitch a hilarious way to finish
tomdude - AltLd - 13/Sep/09 with rob

Led 1,3,5,7. Wanted to climb this for so long and it was everything I thought it would be, technical and a bit bold, suburb rock and quality climbing. Up there with the best routes I've climbed, with every pitch giving interest especially 3 and 4 witch were both bold and technical. This route is summed up but Sean's comments on pitch 2 SUBLIME!

Lead pitches 2, 4 and 6.. One of the best routes Ive climbed so far and a great intro to Etive Slabs.A lovely line full of teetery techy goodness that just gets better as you go up.MIldly run out on pitch 4 I guess but after a few words with myself I moved on. the friction is your friend

have been up the pause 3 times. one of my favourite climbs ever! The traverse on guidebook pitch 3 is 5b but well protected. I have belayed short of this at swastika under the overlap (making the traverse pitch 4) which makes it easier to communicate on the traverse. the pitch after is easier at 5a, but the route isn't obvious at the top and its a bit runout. from then on its just good fun. brilliant!
