Cioch Direct* S 4a
[Cioch Direct, 3 kb]150m, 5 pitches. UPDATE 5 JUNE 2011

Members of Skye MRT were able to clear up any obviously loose blocks last Saturday. Many thanks to them from many on UKC I'm sure.
Talking in detail with one member it seems that anything left currently seems solid enough to justify an ascent but caution and delicacy is clearly still crucial. In particular there are 2 large flakes that may seem suitable for laybacking but the leverage involved would not be a good idea. Removing these clearly was not deemed suitable/possible but weathering effects of rain, wind and freeze may change this over the coming seasons. As a result I have added more caution to the description.

Cìoch Direct 150m Severe * (1907)
This classic line has a number of areas of loose rock that must be treated with extreme caution. It follows the obvious main fault splitting the Lower Buttress starting at the bottom left edge of the face.
1. 25m Climb the open chimney-gully which is often damp in the back.
2. 40m Follow a long easy groove then two chimneys to a large sloping ledge at
the base of an overhanging chimney. Try to avoid belaying immediately below.
3. 20m There is particularly loose rock at the start of this pitch. The tight chimney gives an awkward crux which is best climbed without a
rucsac. Continue up the cracks above until just below a small overhung nose.
4. 35m Follow a sloping shelf up and left passing a jumble of boulders (care; the
protruding Yardarm fell off in 2000) and a slab to twin cracks.
5. 30m Climb the twin cracks then easy climbing to the Terrace.

Full details of belaying out of the line would have been too wordy but apparently there is a single old peg on the left and more natural gear a further few feet left again.

A great Classic Rock line. Varied, interesting awkward chimney pitch but fun. If you were just a severe leader you probably would of had your brown corduroys on...! I led2nd/3rd chimney. Crag was wet in lots of places, including this route...

cookacat - AltLd O/S - 07/Jun/12 with halla

150m route. I lead first pitch and then alternated with Adam.C. Was enjoyable but wet so made it more difficult and needed LOADS of chalk as the route was in pretty much a small stream. Halla and Alex.M followed us up. Did awkward belay behind a massive flake in a foot wide gap about 10m above actual belay point. Ridiculous rope drag because of pulling round the flake. Great route but had to come down without continuing up and doing Arrow route and integrity as it started raining.

The chimney is hard, carrying sacks made it worse as you cant turn. Platerpus in my sack got squashed as i fought my way up, forcing water out of the tube and down my legs, wetting the holds for Nigel. I thought id wet myself with fear. At least I never have to do it again! Then I went off route, leaving Nigel a poorly protected pitch to get us back on track

Not a very good route, but done as part of massive link-up, so good day. Slot on pitch 2 is hard with a big sack, some seriously dangerous fresh rockfall on pitch three is ready to kill someone. Could probably do with trundling by a publicly minded and safe team.

Was camping in Corrie Lagan. Set off up Cioch Grooves with Windy, hoping to meet up with Little Steve on the Terrace to do the Arrow. The rain came down and we abbed off with the masses who were on Cioch Direct. Sat in tent for an hour and then went off in big boots (no rucsacs!) and did it in the streaming wet. When I reached up to the first hold the water ran down my sleeve and I was wet from then until the following day when we went back down... Windy did the chimney: well he is a caver afterall! I did the slab, little gear and running like a river. Happy days.
