Swastika Stones, Ilkley: Mike Gray © Andy Birtwistle
Lying in the shadow of its big gritstone neighbour this charming little collection of rocks is home to a selection of boulder problems that give a mid-grade technical challenge away from the masses. Poised to the northwest of the town of Ilkley, Swastika Stones are the start of a shallow ridge which continues to Piper's Crag and Windgate Nick. The crag gets its name from the curious rock carving that is visible on the highest buttress surrounded by the iron fence.
From the parking on Heber's Ghyll Drive, walk straight up the obvious path through the trees to a gate in the wall leading to the open fell. The boulders come into view as you exit the woods. Follow the main path until a small track leads off rightwards and up to the first boulders.
This crag is a little esoteric but offers some great views, mainly good rock, short but scenic walk in and the majority of the problems feature barn doors and thuggy moves. Well worth a trip if you're in the area.short vid on Vimeo https://vimeo.com/297610100 Ehmarra - 02/Nov/18 |
