Escamellau bounds the Juan de la Cuadra range on the North, which in turn separates the Puertos de Áliva, on the East, from the Moñetas valley, on the West.
About 500 m. before the village of Sotres, on a hairpin bend to the left on the road, take the dirt track signposted for Puertos de Áliva to the right. Depending on where the snow line lies, the car can be parked by Invernales del Texu, the first cluster of shephers' huts, or by the Vegas del Toro (aka Vegas de Sotres), a second cluster of shepherds' huts almost at the foot of the peak. The difference on approach time will be 1h20' from the former to 20' from the latter.
