A pleasant if unspectacular venue that's worth a visit if in the area. Save for a few trucks rumbling up the track, it's quiet and has a nice outlook. There are 11 crags on either side of a gorge, so always able to find sun or shade as required. Routes range from around 10m to 30m, most routes are fully bolted and equipped with good quality lower offs. A dirt road runs up the gorge, so you can belay by the car in some cases, but careful with parking. The area is in the Sierra Nevada Natural Park and Ruta de les mineros has a pleasant 8.2km circular walk which would take around 3hrs 30min to complete.

The area is about a mile from the town of Orgiva, an interesting place full of craft shops and hippies. From the village or Orgiva, take the A348 south over the bridge and turn right onto the A346 signposted Motril. Go under the tunnel and follow the road for around 1km, then take the pull in on the left, signposted Mina Carriles.
Very dusty due to traffic to and from quarry. We walked from the campsite in about 30 mins. dmorgan27 - 29/May/17 |
