A smooth slab like mountain which provides arguably the best views in Yosemite; revealing the Matthes Crest, Cathedral Peak, the Stately Pleasure Dome and a sensational view of Half Dome from the other direction. A massive distance but covered in the most part very quickly. Almost all who venture this way, do so for the Northwest buttress: the bottom ten pitches or so are vague and easy but enjoyable climbing can be had anywhere. Aiming for the sharp left edge of the face will bring you to steeper rock and a good crux fingery crackline and awkward overlap. After some scrambling an awkward little face brings you to the standard escape leftwards up a shiny ramp. Most parties will, however, opt for the supposed 5.7 (misgraded, 5.5 is more accurate) variation and trend more directly to the top.
Descent via a path that traverses the treeline in the middle of the mountain. Stay at the top of the trees by the face until back where you started. Paths that appear to offer descending shortcuts invariably 'cliff out'.
Path to the crag requires good route finding.
