Climbs 71
Rocktype Limestone
Altitude 1853m a.s.l
This steep, sometimes dusty, limestone crag is one of New Mexico's premiere sport climbing crags. Only a 2 hour drive from Hueco Tanks it can make a great change of scene. The rock is unusual in nature and provides powerful climbing on holds that often feel slopey. Although the style of climbing here often challenges the newcomer, the routes are of a high quality. Onsighting here is hard work! The less well traveled routes suffer from a little loose rock and a slightly friable crust.
As you drive up the hill from Alamogordo you will approach a tunnel. Park at the scenic viewpoint just before you enter the tunnel. The Shady side crags are a short walk up the slope on the south side of the road. The Sunnyside crags can be seen across the gorge and require a 15 minuite walk.
