Steep edging on perfect gneiss © Lee Harrison

Crag features

The most popular crag in the Oslo region. High quality gneiss with many classics. There is a good mixture of sport and trad at all grades, although the sport routes are considerably more popular. It can be very popular at weekends, particularly if there are courses happening.

The crag is east facing, therefore offers afternoon and evening shade as well as tree cover shade in some parts. Despite this many routes are quick drying. Mosquitos can be a problem during the summer months but not to an extent as to detract from visiting.

A couple of ice lines also form on Hovedveggen during cold winter periods.

Approach notes

Take the T-bane from central Oslo to Ulsrud or park at Østmarkasetra. The walk-in takes around 30 minutes. Cycling the first part can speed this up to 15 mins.

Reaching Veslefeltet and sector further north is most easily done by following the paths above the crag then descending either at Veslefeltet or just north of the route, Bolt Junkie. Use the lake and freestanding rock features as a reference point as to what part of the crag lies below.

Restricted Access

Hovedfeltet and Veslefeltet have a bird ban in place from 1st April until 15th July due to a pair of nesting Peregrine Falcons.
