Illimani, at the southern edge of the Cordillera Real in Bolivia, dominates the sky on the background of La Paz. The peak is more of a massif, stretching for 6km over 5 distinct summits, the main ones being Norte, 6427m, Central and Sur, 6439m. A variety of routes exist from the easy normal route, to the more complicated traverses of the massif which can take anything from 18 hours for the traverse of the three central peaks, to 4-5 days for a traverse of the five peaks.
From La Paz either hire a jeep (expensive) or taxi (cheapest) to take you to Pinaya (3hrs) where donkeys and porters can be arranged. To return, make arrangements with the above to pick you up, or wait for the local bus service which takes about 6-7 hours but is the cheapest option.
