freeze//thaw: Ice Climbing in a Changing ClimateFri Night Vid

© American Alpine Club

This week's Friday Night Video takes us to New England, USA, where variable conditions and warmer temperatures are creating ice climbs that come into condition, go out of condition, and change entirely almost as fast as they can be climbed.

This video looks at the effects of climate change on the winter climbing community of New Hampshire. Through analysing archival photos from local climber Al Hosper's website neclimbs, and weather data across the past seventeen years, scientists are able to identify how temperature changes have influenced ice formation, and forecast how this will affect the ice climbing season going forward.

Whilst guides are currently able to adapt to these unreliable conditions, finding alternate routes and delaying courses until the weather turns colder, studies indicate that by the end of the century that may no longer be an option.
