Leah Crane - Hard Boulder in Sustenpass, Switzerlandby Jack Geldard - Editor - UKC Sep/2010This news story has been read 8,204 times
Crane, one of the UK's top female boulderers, has previously climbed Font 8A and described her efforts on Zentrale Traverse: "The weather was so poor I didn't even know if there was any point in putting my boots on. It was raining on and off so all the top-outs were a no go. Instead I took to a traverse, very crimpy but surprisingly my style. I warmed up on the start and worked the middle and end moves for half an hour or so. They were hard but do-able. Having had a rest I pulled on for my first attempt from the start. The start and middle went easily but by the end my fingers were numb and my hands stopped closing quickly. I stared at my fingers to stay closed and managed to do the hard mantle at the end which I hadn't actually tried, so I guess I got lucky!" The Sustenpass boulders are a set of superb granite blocks in a beautiful alpine setting in Switzerland. You can read more about the Sustenpass Boulders and see a photo gallery in the UKC Logbooks. Zentrale Traverse is graded 8A in some topos such as the Blocheart guidebook and is graded 7C+ on some websites such as 8a.nu. Leah is sponsored by Berghaus , La Sportiva , Petzl and Beal .
