Two Brits in Kranj Lead WC Finals Today

© Shauna Coxsey

Molly Thompson-Smith and Shauna Coxsey have qualified for the IFSC Lead World Cup finals in Kranj, Slovenia in 5th and 7th place respectively. This was Shauna's first ever World Cup in lead, having specialised in bouldering and won the overall World Cup title in 2016 and 2017. The finals will be streamed at 4pm UK time today on the IFSC YouTube page and on the Olympic Channel.

According to Graeme Alderson, the last time that two Brits qualified for a lead World Cup final was at Birmingham in 1994, when Fliss Butler and Naomi Guy were competing.

Molly has now made four finals this season and is set to finish top ten in the overall rankings. Hannah Slaney made her first lead World Cup final on home turf in Ratho, Edinburgh in September.

Fantastic effort by both women. Shame no men got through though. I have to say the semi final route, with powerful one move boulder problem that only the best could do, was perhaps ideal for our bouldering world champ. But even top boulderers Akiyo and Miho fell off there along with most of the rest of the field.
