Manchester based Barbara Musial has had a great season on the UK limestone. Highlights include redpoint ascents of Urgent Action (F8a+) at Kilnsey and GBH (F8a+) at Malham.

Her friend Stu Harmer gives us some details:

"Barbara Musial is a very modest, retiring sort of person; just the kind who wouldn't want to publicise her achievements to the wider climbing world. As she won't, I will!

Barbara lives in Manchester and she is originally from Poland. She has been sport climbing in the UK for a few years now, first at Portland whilst she lived in London, then moving onto Peak limestone and Yorkshire limestone, where she is a familiar face most weekends.

2010 has proved to be a great climbing year for Basia (pronounced Basher), as she is known by some of her friends, with successful redpoints of Urgent Action (F8a+), The Bulge, (F8a) The Thumb (F8a) and The Ashes (F7c+) at Kilnsey crag in Yorkshire and a quick ascent of GBH (F8a+) at Malham.

Barbara climbed her first 8a at the Raven Tor in the Peak, with an ascent the fingery and technical In Brine (F8a). She has since added The Toilet (F8a), also at Raven Tor and New Age Traveller (F8a) at Malham to her growing list of F8's.

She was making fine progress on Ecstasy (F8b), at Kilnsey crag, earlier this year; but the British weather has put paid to that until spring. Barbara is currently taking a well deserved holiday.....in Siurana."

Impressive stuff. I went to Kilnsey for the first time this year and, in between getting dizzy looking at the crag, saw someone who I now know to be Barbara making solid progress on one of the classic F8s. I remember thinking at the time how good it was to see a(n obviously) talented and motivated climber climbing so impressively and having absolutely no clue who they were - no pics splashed in the media etc., just someone doing what they enjoy for themselves. Inspirational. Of course, I realise this report has undermined my point entirely, but sod it, you know what I mean.

Excellent! Lovely to hear about some of the more introvert climbing talents around the UK. Might have to write in about a few friends of mine at some point, give them the same treatment! Keep cranking it out Barbara, inspirational ticklist!
