Tim Emmett talks about Spray OnVideo

British climber Tim Emmett and Slovenian climber Klemen Premrl recently completed what is undoubtedly one of the most impressive ice/mixed routes in the world with their ascent of the grossly overhanging Spray On... Top at Helmken Falls, Canada.

We met up with Tim whilst he was working on a Mountain Hardwear meet in the ice climbing Mecca of Cogne in Italy. Tim was giving his ice climbing wisdom to the lucky members of the Mountain Hardwear Academy, which is a program in which members of the public apply to join the 'Academy' and get training and advice in all different aspects of climbing from Alpinism to sport climbing.

Tim was enthusing about Spray On... Top and gave us all the details. Given the way he made short work of onsighting the crux M11 pitch of the Cogne mixed classic Jedi Master, we think his gradings for Spray On... Top are probably pretty spot on.

Route Information:

Spray On... Top!
200m - 230m. The first pitch may be underground, this depends on the prevailing snow and ice conditions
(WI10), WI10, WI9, M6+, M8, M7, M9+, M6, M6

Very smooth bit of ice climbing going on in the background of Tim's wittertainment.

He's adopting the American climbers' tick of putting super- in front of everything. Super-cool, super-hard, super-psyched. It's one of those annoying things that once you've first spotted it, you can't help notice it everywhere. And its fine once in while but listening to some American climbers and super is every fourth word. It's like about 6 years ago when the BBC seemed to stop talking about soldiers and only discuss "boots on the ground". Argggghhhhhhh. But the ice climbing is super-cool. I wish I could climb that smoothly and confidently! The ice does seem very user-friendly though, lots of first time placements.
