What are the vertical grooves above the climber? They almost look like the grooves you see in abandonded quarries where they drilled to put in the explosives. Or are they natural?

Basically its erosion. They're the marks ropes leave on soft rock when they've been running over them many many times. Obviously you cant carry one everywhere but use a rope protecter when you can!
