This photo was taken after I was instructed to leave Bime (remote airstrip in the Star Mountains in the East of Papua Province, Indonesian New Guinea) after spending one night there. I had hoped to hire 3 porters to help me make an ascent of remote Puncak Mandala (4,600+ metres) to determine if the ice cap had melted. Although I had a travel permit to be there, I had to fly back to Jayapura and negotiate access with the Kepala Desa (Headman) from Oksibil District first. Difficult to do when we don't speak the same language!
