For August, the snow looks remarkably, er, snowy. August nowadays, the couloir of the Col de Peuterey doesn't look like that. The serac of the N Face looks very similar to the present - maybe now the slope to the right of the serac is wider...?

Hi Jon! That was the summer where mid July looked like winter after 2 weeks of snow - this was the beginning of august so the mountains were only just beginning to get back in condition.
The top parts of the blanche look very similar to today (http://www.ukclimbing.com/images/dbpage.html?id=88557) - the big difference, as you say, is the col which has much less snow cover (no personal experince of course - this IS UKC, after all!
