After abseiling from the station on Sgurr nan Gillian we were dumbfoundered as to why the rope wouldn't pull through. After climbing back up the rope had knotted itself to the tat! Chance in a million? It could have led to an epic but re-rigging and leaving behind a crab allowed us to continue...
Any ideas how this happened and if its happened to anyone before?

I was at a talk by Mick Fowler recently and he said he removes the tape from the ends of his ropes now - he suspects something similar happened to him in the Himalayas! (He had to cut the rope.)

We were on the last abseil down a bolt route on the Peigne, and both me and my mate watched the rope whip around and tie itself into thumbknot like yours as we tried to pull it down.

This happened to me abseiling off the Chere Couloir. Now taken the tape of the end of my ropes also.
