Island Peak 6,189m / 20,400ft stands at the head of the Imja Khola (river), a tributary of the Khumbu Valley that leads to Mt Everest. It was named by Eric Shipton in 1952 and was climbed the following year by Evans, Gregory, Wylie and Tenzing Norgay who were testing oxygen apparatus for the 1953 ascent of Everest.
