Paperback edition produced for the austere 1940's market, with an apology on the back because it had to be sold for 1/6d .
This was one of the first successful small scale expeditions to climb a Himalayan giant. There was no official leader and due to Sherpa illness the Anglo- American party had to carry its own camps up the mountain.
In his preface to the 1937 edition his typical self effacing nature is shown when alters Dr Johnson's view that 'any blockhead can write if he sets himself doggedly to it ' to 'any blockhead can write a book if he has something to write about'. And observes the only reason he has anything to write about is entirely due to the British and Americans he climbed with.
Brilliant.
