Might be just a coincidence, but today's exactly 50 years after the 31 May 1970 Huascaran tragedy, when an earthquake-triggered ice and rock avalanche killed tens of thousands of people, among them a whole Czechoslovak mountaineering team of fourteen climbers (incl. a very talented mountaineering photographer Heckel). Still, a nice photo!

Yes, 70,000 dead and 50,000 injured. The monument is very moving....

Yes...70000 dead and 50000 injured. A tragedy of biblical proportions, and not much reported in the west. I have visited the monument, it very moving...
