A substantial lump of rock (75kg) has been levered out from the underside of the Pickled Walnut boulder on the north side of the hill. IMO this rock was attached to the boulder, although in a less compact state than the original granite, leaving an large vertical/horizontal scar.
I assume this was done to access a horizontal roof crack leading the north facing established crack-line.
I thought it was accepted that altering the existing rock/boulder structure to facilitate a new problem, however worthwhile, is both reprehensible and devalues our involvement with the natural environment.
