Anyone know of any good climbing guide books for Germany in English? I've just moved to Germany and the closest mountain / outdoorsy area is the Harz mountains but so far haven't tracked down any guidebooks in English!
German guidebooks - except for Elbesandstein - are mostly topo-based so understanding the text is optional. That said, there are a couple of English editions for the Frankenjura. Don't know if that helps cos I don't know where the Harz is.
We climb in the Harz and the Ith fairly regularly, but I've never seen any English guidebooks, although if I remember correctly, the original "Klettern im Norden" has an English intro and access details. As has been said previously, the guides are pretty much in topo format, so you can generally find your way to the main areas ok. Where in Germany are you based?
