Can anyone tell me how long the traverse is accessible either side of low tide on the main cliff. Want to do Scavenger but low tide will be8.30 am when we go in June.
It tends to be cut off 2-3 hours either side of high tide in my experience - although this depends a bit on whether it's a spring or neap tide. Start at 9/10 and as long as you don't faff on the first pitch (which is short anyway and gets you out of the firing line of the tide) you'll be fine.
It's worth mentioning that the routes on the Main Cliff tend to remain quite greasy until the sun hits, as such it's usually worth waiting midday/early afternoon before getting on routes. The levels of vaseline coating the rock can be quite alarming and certainly makes things a lot more difficult (and a lot less enjoyable)!!
That said, if you've got a specific weekend in mind this doesn't really help you much...
In reply to john morrissey: Castell Helen is always a good choice for morning low tides, much more sun and much more social as a result. When you're done there take a walk over to Wen Zawn, it'll be perfect by the afternoon/evening. Obvioulsy some of the routes are tidal there, but you can always start things like A Dream of White Horses (HVS 4c), The Quartz Icicle (E2 5b) etc... from the ledge at the top of the first pitch of Wen (HVS 5a).
