Guys

I have traditionally used a GPS60CSx and Mapyx Quo for plotting and walking in the UK.

I have treated myself to a nice shiny Android phone and would like to use this to map and plot routes. I would like to use maps offline and I would like to plot walks in Italy, in the first instance. We will be heading to Lake Garda later this year.

Can anyone advise me?

Thanks in advance

I haven't used this myself, but will soon be trying a similar thing on my Garmin. Worth a look:

Suggestions:

OruxMaps
Locus

I prefer the look and feel of Orux, but it takes a while to set up, as it's full of features. As is Locus.

Then pick your favourite open source mapping; Orux comes with built-in sources you can select. And you can download areas with selectable levels and save them to local disk.

I use Back Country Navigator. It costs £10 but allows caching of OS maps at 1;25,000 and 1;50,000 scale under wi fi at home

So effectively you get the whole UK for free

Recently I've been using Offline Maps Plus. It's pretty good and can use almost any kind of mapping.

On Android only, try Maverick.

I use Viewranger but I have spent a fair bit of money on the mapping...

Another vote for viewranger - although I get the maps for free - so don;t know how expensive they are to buy

I have used a combination of Where's The Path - http://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm - to create a GPX file and then load it into Maverick on my phone.
