Just guessing, but there might be an issue with opening up logbook pages for people with a lot of logbook entries.

I just tried https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/showlog.php?id=32337 and https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/showlog.php?id=140 for example and they're both loading very slowly (~58seconds on lats load).

Possible evidence to support your theory is that I too had probs with it yesterday and I have over 8000 entries. In the end it did open after several attempts. Never had any such slowness before. Just tried again and once more is very slow. I wonder what's happened to make it so?

Incidentally, how did you know who's log books to try to find the ones with very many entries, including that of my friend Paul?

Seems to be the case, went to make a brew and when I came back it was open, cheers all

In reply to petegunn:

Hi Pete, the problem is related to the size of your logbook.

I'm working on a fix. Should be sorted today or tomorrow.

Cheers, Paul.

More speculation on my part, but potentially a database tuning related change? Typically the database will make some assumptions about the data being retrieved by a given query (i.e. everything you need to load a page) and if those assumptions change, or are wrong, it can accidentally choose a way of retrieving the data that is very slow.

https://www.ukclimbing.com/logbook/graphs.php#busiest That link may take you straight there. If not, at the bottom of the 'graphs for all users' there's an ascents by busiest climbers section which lists the top 20 biggest logbooks on UKC.

Hi Pete, I'm not 100% happy with the speed but it should be a lot better than before for you now.

In reply to remus:

The recent change to add the Feedback column was the main culprit to the speed issue. It was doing a JOIN in the main query that was slowing it down a lot.

Rendering the pages on those big logbooks are still a little slow for my liking tho, ~3 seconds to generate a page from a fresh cache isn't great.

I think we could do with a rethink about how the main log data is stored to be honest, there's over 7.2 million rows in the log table now. We use this now and again to optimise queries: https://www.eversql.com/. You can stick the SQL in toegther with the table structure and it suggests adding certain table indexes and tweaking the query slightly. Pretty cool!

Thanks a lot for the response. I was most interested in  the list of biggest logbooks and can now see that I'm in it. Of course there'll be many many more with many more routes who just can't be arsed or haven't the diaries to dig into the past. I'm pleased that I have. I find it cool that each time a route comes into my mind I can whip out my phone and remind myself when I did it and with whom. Having done so a host of associated memories come flooding back - most good, some not so good but all evocative of a time in my life.
