If you could....what would it be??
Mine would be based on the Silva Exped 4.
Get rid of the 1:63 Romer and loose the cm/mm scale on the end.

Degrees not Mils, put the mm/cm ruler on the long side (instead of the inches currently on that side).
Loose the hole through the baseplate (whats that for anyway?).
Fatter needle, and a chunkier Needle housing (For when I have gloves on).

Whats yours like??

In reply to Anonymoose:

The hole is designed for drawing circles on the map (I couldn't believe it either).

In reply to James G: The only time when that would be useful is when copying courses down at an orienteering event. However as most maps for events are pre-printed now it not usually needed and I don't know who would bother to take the time to draw circles that neatly anyway...

Those awkward mountain marathon 1:40,000 maps could do with a romer, rather than the one inch to a mile.

In reply to Wibble Wibble:

Yeap, I'll second that. Out with 1:63 roamer, in with the 1:40!

I can live without the holes, too.

Decent luminous markings for night navigation, with maybe a tritium strip to provide a light source?

Special miniaturised tea-making attachment.

Doesn't seem too much to ask in this day and age, does it?

In reply to Anonymoose: Never been a better compass than the Sunto Type 54NL although sadly been unavailable for years.

In reply to keith_D:

My compass would be digital, linked to satalites, show current location rid reference, and would enable me to program my planned route into it. Could just be a pipe dream though....

So far we have:

Based on the Silva Exped 4.
Lose the cm/mm scale on the end.
Degrees not Mils
put the mm/cm ruler on one long side
Loose the hole through the baseplate
Fatter needle
Chunky Needle housing.
Decent luminous markings
Get rid of the 1:63 Romer.
Have a 1:25, 1:50 and 1:40 Romer.....

Put the 1:25 right along the end of the baseplate?
What else??
