John has kindly donated the questions to UKC so that you can all amaze yourselves by how many answers you actually know!

This is debatable actually. I have heard people who were around at the time say that this was not the motivation and that in fact the initials or those of Barry A Webb and that the name commemorates another incident altogether. Without checking the dates this has never seemed terribly likely chronologically to me, although I do recall vaguely making this point and the chap having some answer ot it.

Anonymous 04 Mar 2005
In reply to Alan James - UKC:

Are you sure Narcissus was before Slip 'n' Slide? This is a hardy Rocktalk perennial discussed several times, and no-one actually seems to be able to put an exact date to either, although my recollection is that S'n'S is said to be 'Spring' 1986 and Narcissus 'May' 1986.

So the only one left is what GWY called Mallory? I know this but unfortunately I can't call it to mind.....this is old age for you. It's something do to do with something classical, isn't it?

What was the 8000m peak with a British FA? Was I right with Kanchenjunga?

If Masters is anything like Edge Lane it's got a lot more shotholes than 2 if you count the ones down the bottom, being pedantic for a moment. And yes, deffo some Edwards bolts in the Girdle - remember looking at them on my first visit in 1983 on that section hanging above the Black Cleft and wondering what the hell they were doing there. Curiously they seemed to have gone when I actually did the Black CLeft last year, but perhaps I was just too absorbed to notice. Don't know about Spartacus.

Hardly a last great problem as it's so eliminate.

Knockin' On Heaven's Door came before Born Slippy didn't it?

Narcissus was before Piece of Mind.

C'mon Alan - were even getting answers mixed up now!

So Jerry Moffat downclimbed Narcisses with a frying pan dangling from his harness before Antoine le Menestrel (nicknamed Animal by Billy Westbay during the first 24 hour ascent of The Nose) put bolts in Rain Dogs so Rachel Farmer could go do the first female ascent of an 8a...

The last correct answer posted at 14.53, 4 hours and 55 minutes after the launch (this is taking Graeme's Bentley answer as correct which is +8 BTW).

Good effort. John asks if we should make this a regular feature of say 20 questions, once a month?

What do you reckon?

Good idea.

Galahad - of course. I knew it was vaguely homoerotic.

+8 - Christ!

Regular - yes, sure. Have to post the questions on the thread so I can see them, mind!

A lot better than people did on my 'small quiz' thread il y a quelque temps.

Well I enjoyed it and learned yet more useless climbing related knowledge in the process - Good questions John.

Understatement of the day JC.. I wonder what Mallory called Whymper in return?

Probably had his mouth full - now what was that thread where someone accused people of wanting to perform an equivalent service for Don Whillans....?

In reply to Derbyshire Ben:

yes, good questions.

I edited three out actually to get it down to 50. Also, John had a load of 'guess the route' slides as well which were great fun.

Edited out questions -

1) There are five sets of traffic lights in the Peak District National Park. Where are they? (Just traffic lights, pedestrian crossings don't count.)

There was some dispute over the answer to this one since we are fairly sure that we thought of 6.

2) Name seven of the sections in On Peak Rock.

Easy if you grab a copy of the book which no-one had on the evening.

3) What is the lapse rate?

In reply to Alan James - UKC:

Oh yes, the traffic lights. I hate to admit it Alan, but I've found another one. There's a set in Peak Forest now (don't ask me why.)

Glad everyone enjoyed them, particularly Derbyshire Ben who obviously doesn't have a lot on at the moment. Good to see that a lot of my questions were utter tosh and recognised as such by all and sundry.

Chris the Tall - too much showing off - just coz you won on the night.

See ya next time.

What do you mean? The route was originally lead as Knockin' before being re-claimed (with direct start and pro placed on lead) and called Born Slippy. Then soloed by Tetler in the original line to reclaim Knockin'. No?
In reply to Alan James - UKC:

Galahad - this was answered immediately on the night of the quiz by several (inc. myself). It's all in Peter Gillman's excellent biography.

really excellent quiz and thread this...I would strongly support a monthly version

this from another member of the +8 crew...doesn't everyone drag their knuckles on the ground??

In reply to Ian Hill: All that was when hold was a relative jug. The hold only broke last year and has been soloed since - even more impressive!

A regular feature would be good.

Most interested people will have seen this but if not http://www.ukclimbing.com/forums/t.php?t=67583, I'm still waitiing for jcm to do his own.
