Kyrgyz Government has been stormed.

Some pretty spectacular shots of the mountains around Bishkek on the BBC News last night.

Anyone planning a trip to the Tien Shan?

In reply to DougG:

Some friends went there last year for some big mountains.

I was there in the summer. Friendly people and 4500m alpine peaks a 40 minute cab ride from Bishkek. If the air fare didn't cost £700 it'd make a great alternative to the Alps.

In reply to Wibble Wibble:

Bishkek is maybe best avoided this summer though, eh?

I was there in 1988 although it was still known as Frunze in those days.

I was there last year. Lovely people and a stunning country. Hope they sort it out peacefully.

In reply to DougG:

Maybe. It's one of the more benign regimes in that part of the world, but hardly a bastion of democracy.

In reply to DougG: That whole region is a mess, Bush and Bliar have supported some of the worst regimes simply to make the war on terror (Chapt one Afghanistan) easier to prosecute.

Oh and there's a bit of oil too.

No oil in Kyrgzstan, but a large strategic american air base.

In reply to Wibble Wibble: I meant the region as a whole.

What does the CIA yearbook say

In reply to sloper:

Oh indeed the region as a whole. Hence the airbases.

I believe they're also a major source of drugs too, which is probably conveniently overlooked.

To quote you a day or so ago... I rather think you miss the point.
