Hi

I'm a novice who's new to Manchester and really want to get climbing regularly. Is there anyone out there who I could join up with at a wall or something please!

In reply to freerangecat: Where abouts in Manchester are you? Do you prefer routes or bouldering? What sort of grade do you climb?

Hi back by the way.

In reply to Richard Bradley:

I'm in Crumpsall, but have a car.
Top rope climbing for the moment please.
Was climbing grade 4 and 5 walls at Manchester climbing centre a couple of weeks ago- not great I know, but there's only 1 way I'm going to get better!

In reply to freerangecat: I will be starting climbing indoors again from next week. We climb at Rochdale on Thursday evenings. Will be doing a lot more on the walls this year (as well as bouldering) as I've just started doing a bit of sport climbing. There is usually a good bunch on Thursdays so drop me a mail if you are interested.

A bunch of us climb regularly at Salford ( See http://www.ukclimbing.com/databases/walls/wallinfo.html?id=147) on Tuesday evenings from about 6.00 pm. You're welcome to join us or email me to get on the mailing list.

Hi

I'm also new to Manchester - just moved here last week. Total novice but am interested in climbing so was looking for a wall. Drop me a line. I'm thinking I might try to find a place offering an induction course of some sort?

In reply to freerangecat: I am also new to climbing. I did an hour at Manchester last week and THOROUGHLY enjoyed myself.

Also, I am another who is destined to go "alone".

The problem I have is that I work shifts, so will more-than-likely be doing daytime climbing during the week.

If anyone fancies teaming up for some basic climbing (until I improve) on "odd" days fitted around shift-work, please let me know.

My email is craigaucottATblueyonderDOTcoDOTuk

(Sorry for the way that is written, but I've been spammed too often from other boards)
In reply to Pie Eyed & Eric: The free range one came along to Rochdale wall last thursday and (I think) enjoyed it. Why not come along on or one Thursday?
Pie Eyed 06 Sep 2005
In reply to Eric Mellor: The Manchester wall offers both a "Taster" (1 hour) which I did last week. Costs £25 if you go on your own or £30 for 2 of you.

They aslo do a "Beginners Course" which is 3 x 2 hours. Same day for 3 consecutive weeks. On the website, it showed 1 starting in July, and 1 more in August. When I asked though, they actually run them every week. That costs £65 IIRC.

I hope to see you down there at some point.

As for Rochdale - It might be a bit far, but then again, I might just make it up there. When do you guys generally go ??? Is it evenings, or during the day (I am assuming that it is Thursday evenings).

Thanks
Craig
Pie Eyed 06 Sep 2005
In reply to Richard Bradley: Actually - What time do you guys meet up (provided that it is a regular occurance).

Also, would I be OK to join you, considering that I am an absolute novice (I know the basics. i.e. tying on and belaying, but need practise), whereas you sound like Spiderman compared to me.

Thanks again
Craig
In reply to Pie Eyed: I try to go on thusdays. Arrive about 7.30 to 7.45pm. There most weeks.
In reply to Richard Bradley: Oh, and you would be more than welcome. I do tend to gravitate upstairs to the bouldering after a while though.

Room for a donkey?

Tho i think i`m more in to bouldering then the walls (done them a few times and really enjoyed it)

In reply to freerangecat:

Hiya.

I'm in Manchester too, and like to play at Manchester, and sometimes Rochdale walls.

In fact, seeing as there are so many new Manc climbers, maybe I should arrange another Climbing and Curry meet, cos it's been a while since the last one!

I'll put something up Down The Pub.

In reply to freerangecat:

Thanks for the invites. I'm going to book myself an induction type course in Manchester as living in city center and see how that goes. Assuming I don't kill myself I will then try to make it to rochdale.

Freerangecat / Pie eyed - Let me know if you want to meet up at Manchester wall at some point. Pie Eyed - I generally work a nine to five so it would be mostly evenings and weekends for me i'm afraid - e-mail is ericmellor@hotmail.com

thanks

In reply to Richard Bradley:

Lol

nar, i do genrally forget things....

I also dont have any kit (used to use my ex g/fs stuff)
Pie Eyed 07 Sep 2005
In reply to Richard Bradley: I've never tried bouldering, but it looks like fun.

Perhaps you could throw a few pointers my way for it (although it does look like you need a bit more upper-body strength than I currently possess for it).

I might try to join you next Thursday (15th), although I might struggle as I fly out to Italy on Friday, so my wife might not be too happy about me buggering off up to Rochdale when I should be packing.
In reply to Pie Eyed: Ok. Hope to see you there sometime. Don't forget to pack your rock shoes for italy...

Cool, looks like there could be a few of us. Have been looking forward to going again since about 10 minutes after I got home last thurs (work is that much fun atm)!

Where abouts in Italy you going ? We also going Italy Friday, to Bergamo. Looking for more Dolomite action.

Also climb Manchester and occasionally Rochdale

In reply to Pussycat: Just having a week on the beach at Sorrento with my wife and 2 year old daughter.

No climbing for me (saying that, I've only just started to learn, so I don't feel ready for the great outdoors just yet).

If you're flying from Manchester T2 on the 15.00 flight, let me know and I'll make myself known.

Can you rephrase that please!

sounds like a new Climbers Club on the way?

In reply to Pussycat: You could always pop along to Rochdale on Thursday evening. A couple of newbies should be there. Although you should be warned that I will attempt to lure you to the bouldering darkside!
Pie Eyed 14 Sep 2005
In reply to Richard Bradley: Yes please matey !!!!!!

I don't think that I'm either strong or experienced enough to manage bouldering, but that is definitely something that I'm interested in, if only because it gives me the option of going to a climbing wall alone and not being forced to find a partner if I don't feel like it.

It's looking good for tomorrow BTW - The packing's going OK, and Elaine seems to accept that I really want to go, so (hopefully) won't try to "guilt" me out of it.
In reply to Pie Eyed: Pop along. Bouldering isn't elitist by the way otherwise there is no way I would do it! Free range cat will be there as well and I'm happy to belay (and climb walls) for a while though so no worries!
OP freerangecat 15 Sep 2005
In reply to Richard Bradley Pie Eyed:
I wouldn't mind doing some climbing downstairs too, though we'd have to be a bit careful if you are heavier than me and I belay you, as there aren't any sandbags and i went flying last time I belayed Richard! Do some bouldering as well though- its good fun, and I'm really lacking in upper body strength- I'm hoping that I'm going to build it up by bouldering regularly!
In reply to freerangecat: You are restricted to belaying feathers!
Pussycat 15 Sep 2005
In reply to Richard Bradley:

Bouldering darkside ??! This sounds ominous, got up to route number eight a few weeks ago. Then its all upper body overhangs for which I've no chance (yet)

In reply to Pussycat: Lots of boulder problems involve no strength whatsoever. Just working out the how!

We will be downstairs toproping and possibly leading as well. Pop along.
OP freerangecat 15 Sep 2005
In reply to Richard Bradley:
> You are restricted to belaying feathers!

I'm not that light!
Pussycat 15 Sep 2005
In reply to Richard Bradley:

Struggling to get there tonight, but if you're at Rochdale next thurs (22nd) then count me in. Will bring harness in case.
In reply to Pussycat: I will be there most weeks till spring, which is a slightly sad thought.
In reply to freerangecat: Your a scientist. What is heavier, a ton of lead or a ton of feathers?
OP freerangecat 15 Sep 2005
In reply to Richard Bradley:
> Your a scientist. What is heavier, a ton of lead or a ton of feathers?

Ha ha!
Pussycat 15 Sep 2005
In reply to Richard Bradley:

Sometimes go Manchester on a Tuesday. Waiting for them to finish the improvements then maybe buy a ten climb pass. The £55 initial expense for it has been stumbling block.
Keep finding the bouldering at Manchester a bit desperate for my liking, climbing partner does quite well up to V2, I cant even get up V0. So I traverse round the quieter top roped areas which is fine and more fun for me.
OP freerangecat 15 Sep 2005
In reply to Pussycat:
Maybe we could have a feline session on the top-roped walls there sometime!
Pussycat 15 Sep 2005
In reply to freerangecat:

Course, count me in. Was at Mcr on Tues, waiting for themn to finish wall. Also free some Thurs and possibly Wednesdays or Fridays at a push (when not in't ills). Only a grade 4 climber tho !
Pussycat 15 Sep 2005
In reply to freerangecat:

BTW. What grade was the route on your mugshot ??
In reply to Pussycat: Probably tree Diff?

Anyone going tonight?

Also is the bouldering wall fully functional?
In reply to eeyore: You could feed it viagra?
Sarah Crowe 28 Sep 2005
In reply to eeyore:

I should be there tonight, about 7ish, depending on whether i can finding someone to climb with

I think the bouldering walls closed all week
 ThePimpOfCrimp 28 Sep 2005
In reply to eeyore: I asked John Dunne yday and he reckons the bouldering wall in the main area should have its extension complete and rdy to climb for friday. The new bouldering room is still 1-2 weeks off.

I try to climb 2-3 times a week at MCC and between myself and a few friends we tend to climb grades from 4 to 6c/7a(ish) and boulder anything between V0-V7 so if anybody still wants a hand feel free to mail me and i'll give yeh my mobile number.
eeyore 28 Sep 2005
awwwwww poo!

I`ll have to go next week then, only really in to the bouldering.

(and not really good at that!)
