Hi all.

Trying to get joint life insurance for my partner and myself. Not going for enough to cover the whole mortgage; just enough to keep the wolves from the door for a year or two, if the worst happened to one of us.

Egg were offering a special deal. They published a quote of £5 per month - now I have no doubt that only particularly pious monks qualified for that rate! However, I was a little surprised when, on telling them about rock climbing and fairly wussy alpine mountaineering our quote for £20,000 cover went up from £5 to £19 per month!

Having said that, we do want cover. And we're off to the Alps in a couple of weeks, so we'd like to get it arranged soon.

Does £19 per month sound remotely reasonable for £20k of joint cover, given I'm a smoker and both of us have slightly less than perfect family medical histories?

All opinions welcome!
Cheers,
Jamie

In reply to Jamie Wakeham: No idea if your quote is good but maybe check http://www.thebmc.co.uk/services/more/life.htm

In reply to Jamie Wakeham: We tried lots of places including the BMC and other specialist services. Climbing in Europe (as in over the channel) puts you up a risk category. We found they all hiked the premiums but then put in a clause that said if the claim is anything to do with climbing you're not covered. Rubbish really and then why the increase if we're not covered for the climbing?

Cheers

In reply to Toby_W: at least our £19 per month *does* seem to cover death whilst climbing.

I'm off to have a look at the BMC's insurance - didn't realise they did life as well as accident!

Cheers,
Jamie

In reply to Jamie Wakeham:

(I have sent an email to Jamie personally about his quote) - BUT

Just for info, I have been in touch with Summit Financial services (BMC Website) and had a chat with the fellow there - he explained that some companies do not want to insure climbers at all and will do a big loading, which I found (Norwich Union and Royal Liver for a start).

I found that Standard Life and Legal and General accepted us at standard rates (we go caving too). That was for climbing every week indoors, four times a month outdoors in summer and a week in Spain type thing.

Might be worth checking these companies out to save time.

I guess the premium will depend on smoking, health etc but may as well find a co that will not penalise the climbing for a start.

In reply to Jamie Wakeham: Jamie, do you have any life insurance through your salary package ? If so will it cover your mortgage ?

I was offered a similar deal when I took out my mortgage, but found that life insurance was 4x my salary from work already, and as I had no dependants decided not to bother.

Keep shopping around. I found that quotes could vary a lot.

Does the AMI (Association of Mountaineering Instructors) know of a reasonable insurer I wonder ?

In reply to IPPurewater: erm... I don't know. Really should find out!

WoketteUK - received after all; thanks ever so. Hotmail just thinks you're junk mail

In reply to IPPurewater:

if you are a member of AMI you can get insurance through perkins and slade- check out their website....but that is only really for indemnity though and not life insurance.
