In reply to Cristina Zentilin:

I saw a pizza shop that had decked their window out with flowers and balloons and notices saying 'a happy valentines day to all our customers' - that seemed a little odd to me.

I don't have a problem with valentines day, but not done like that. I do have a problem with how commercialised it seems to be.

nothing says 'love' like a good 12"!

In reply to Cristina Zentilin: I've just posted this on another thread, but what the hell, it's a good lyric and it might help keep all those horrible soul ballads out of your mind. Brilliant dub track by the black seeds - http://www.theblackseeds.com/ - which goes

"What we need is to
love ourselves
too many times before I
thought I needed it
from somebody else"

Find it, play it, and relax about all this valentine's day stuff.

Ha ha - if they'd had a sign saying THAT in the window I wouldn't have grumbled about it. In fact I'd've gone in and bought one (!)

Have just booked a client lunch for Valentine's afternoon. She's a single girl too so we're going to go out and have a nice fancy lunch and probably about 40 cocktails afterwards on the company! Happy Valentine's!

Just ignore it if you don't like it. You're giving even more publicity to the whole event every time you rant about it!

(Just like people moaning about big brother!)
Cristina Zentilin 05 Feb 2007
In reply to rehab21: i dont mind valentines day but im just fed up with how comercialised it is, and how much people feel obliged to spend for their loved ones. surely just a small something will do.

but then again ive never really had a proper valentines day so i cant really compare.

god i sound like a real looser. must go climb more and cheer myself up. like you said love myself more. I thought i did but had a set back. right!

i love myself....hmmm

In reply to Cristina Zentilin:
> (In reply to rehab21) i dont mind valentines day but im just fed up with how comercialised it is <

Fed up with commercialism full stop. Happy to rant at length about the foolish waste of money and resources and the keeping up with the HJoneseys and the increasingly short lived 'must have' technologies and the Hallmark festivals imported from the states and all the high street stores hanging a years sales figures on a record christmas period and the new cars for no reason and people prefering to pick up a £3 top rather than think about the ethics of encouraging sweat shop labour in China and the towns with no local shops other than pound shops and charity outlets and the hipocracy of supermarkets strangling their supply chain.

<pauses for breath>

For example: Got an 'all users' email at work last week offering a free 28" flat screen tv - asked why they were getting rid of it and found out that they'd redecorated and thought they should replace their tv too... it was in perfect nick... it cost £300 last year... it was just silver... madness.

Apologies for the hi-jack.

Cristina Zentilin 05 Feb 2007
In reply to rehab21: no prob. i feel exactly the same towards anything like that. want to do a masters on sustainable design or design physcology.

i think people are waiting for the comercial world to realise we dont actually care anymore. but now theyve latched onto health and safety. god knows what will happen with this new idea!!

In reply to Cristina Zentilin: I think it's great, but only because I've got friends who's birthday falls on the 14th Feb, and there is nothing more amusing than the look of complete horror and dread on couples faces as a load of us drunkenly walk into a restaurant or bar and entirely break the quiet pseudo romantic mood they were trying to make. Hehe, it's fun to be a bastard from time to time

que me stating typical male comment, comercial day, excuse for halmark to make money blah blah blah...

that's the weird thing about it, that even if you're not participating you still get people giving you odd looks if you're doing normal stuff on feb 14th. It's hardly christmas day!
 Little Brew 05 Feb 2007
In reply to CJD: exactly! i was planning on going out with a few of my single mates, but we decided the weird looks would be too much so P-A-R-T-Y at mine it is then.

hehe
 Wonrek 05 Feb 2007
In reply to Cristina Zentilin & other singles: So why not spend the evening being nice to and pampering yourself?

Think of some things that you wouldn't normally indulge in by yourself and then plan to do them.

Buy and drink the champagne, eat the choccies, sit in your pj's and bunny slippers, watch numerous crappy DVD's

But most of all don't feel angry or bitter because of the date, after all that's all it is, just another day and although others will be doing the lovey thing just think how many of those poor people only get it because of that date and spend the next 364 day being unappreciated.

You however can be nice and love yourself any and every day you want to.

Hows that for a different perspective?

good thoughts - but for me, I wasn't really thinking of doing anything for it! i don't mind not making a fuss.
 Wonrek 05 Feb 2007
In reply to CJD: I'm hoping to be nursing a newborn (and probably will be rather sore) so probably not the most romantic of days for me then.

Not making a fuss is ok, getting bitter about it is not so.

I shall be spending valentines day with my one true love. Who loves me back unconditionally. I haved loved them for nearly a year now and my life changed dramatically when I met them. I spend so much money on them that my bank manager is unhappy. I fell in love from the first time I saw them but it wasn't until the second time I spent with them that I really realised this feeling. I spend lots of my time with them now. We have been through so much together but our love is slowly progressing. It's now on the cusp of 5c+.

If your reading this..... I love you rocks.

I can't find a suitable card or present though. Any ideas?

Oh and if you want to join us climbing on Valentines day I am sure you will find love with the rocks Cristina!

 HC~F 05 Feb 2007
In reply to tommyzero: Climbing sounds like a perfect way to spend Valentine's Day to me . In fact, that's what I was doing on Valentine's Day last year! Although last year I was climbing in Spain (whilst my then fiance was at work in London). This year it'd have to be climbing at the castle, and you never know I might even persuade my husband to join me!

I don't hold with Valentine's being more special than any other day if you're already part of a couple. I think it's actually more fun when you're single as you can take the opportunity to give someone you fancy a card they're not expecting, then watch as they try and work out who it is from .
 tommyzero 05 Feb 2007
In reply to HC~F:

Yeah. I might just take the day off and go love some rock.

I'm not a card person. I prefer to give and recieve gifts. the mean more, people keep them (hopefully), there not commercial and they don't waste trees.

Call me weird but there is something about a card (to me) that says 'I just didn't have time to get you a proper present'.

Dunno, load of boys on here appreciate La Sportiva Miuras, or Scarpa Dominators, or 5.10 Anasazis, and as for belay jackets, or alpine jackets, or down jackets - some of them have one of each!
