Remember in the old days when people used to belay without a specialised belay device? Well building company Fairview seem to think it is back in vogue although they aren't following the conventional 'behind the back' technique.

In reply to Alan James - UKC: ahh don'tcha just love it when a marketing dept gets it soo wrong in relation to climbing!

Even better I remember a seamless switch in one advert/vid from a leading situation with a fall mid route to then suddenly the person topping out on a TOP rope.. i mean come on just a little bit of thought please! You've gone to the effort of going to a place, getting the camera's, the climbing people, H&S, planning etc to then mess it up so that all us climbers just go pha and laugh at it,,

Yeah how did the duracell bunny get them all tied to his rope?

hopefully with an alpine butterfly!

Just out of curiousity, how hard of a climber do you think he would be in real life?

Even better when its a film. Vertical limit? M:I 2 maybe? what about Cliffhanger?

In reply to Alan James - UKC:

looks like a "confidence" rope
 gingerdave13 07 Mar 2007
In reply to anthonyecc: well mI2 yes that was pants,, but vertical limit was just a laugh a minute, it's when they are using real climbers in real situations to advertise - yet still get it wrong,, films are not really meant to be true representations are they?
Serpico 07 Mar 2007
In reply to Alan James - UKC:
I've had worse belays.
 Lancs Lad 07 Mar 2007
In reply to Alan James - UKC:

The belayer looks left handed, well his watch is on his right hand at least.

In reply to anthonyecc:

What was wrong with MI:2. In an interview when critisied about the realism of the climbing intro, John Woo's reply was, "Is the rest of the film realistic? No. Why should I make the intro realistic just to please a bunch of climbers?" or words to that effect. I think he was right.

I actually thought the climbing sequences were pretty good and that Cruise moved pretty well. Looked like a climber to me!

LOL,

Lloyd Grossman voice;

'Now who would buy a house from people like these?'
Serpico 07 Mar 2007
In reply to galpinos:
The climbing sequence in the trailer was actually better than what was used in the opening sequence of the film. The bit that people usually quote as being unrealistic is the reverse crucufix move (the crucifix being some sort of Woo trademark), but then along came Fred:

I don't know about housebuilding, but that would be a great advert for any number of insurance policies: something that looks good to the untrained eye, reassuring and confidence inspiring as long as you never actually test it, and quite likely to let you down badly if you do.

In reply to Serpico:

Ther eused to be a prioblem in the old monkey room at the Castle that was doable with a reverse crucifx - good for showing off to beginners and the easily impressed like Endless Wonkle

In reply to Serpico: isn't Hélicoptère at Bas Cuvier supposed to be something similar?
 galpinos 07 Mar 2007
In reply to Serpico:

I didn't realise they were different.

Fred is a bit of a legend.

In reply to Alan James - UKC: Is it John Cousins from MLTE to contact on the advert?

I hope not.
John Kirk 07 Mar 2007
In reply to Alan James - UKC: slack belay and short-sighted - the ultimate belayer !

In reply to Alan James - UKC:
