In reply to scrubmunched: Funny you should say that, I took a knock playing rugby about 4 weeks ago and my wrist has been aching pretty much since around the scaphoid. Never did get round to going to the quacks about it.

In reply to scrubmunched: Yes my collar bone, it's all fine now. Are you asking about any fractures in particular?
scrubmunched 17 Oct 2007
In reply to urbanmonkey: My scaphoid. I broke it 7 weeks ago but as I'm me I didn't go to a Tunisian hospital and waited till I got back, not freaky about foreign doctors but it would have taken 4 days out of me desert trip. Well strapped up I went on returning to UK. Told me it was broke and to go back next day to get a cast, I had work commitments that require lots of driving and was told I couldn't drive with a cast so.........
Anyway, I'm in quite a bit of pain with anything more than average movement, but still need to keep driving to make money.
Just wondering how much damage I can do or if its jus a longer process.

WOW, I'm off to the hospital.
Freaked me out a bit!

I broke my scaphoid and was confined to plaster for three months. I suggested that this was a little excessive but many people, some of them qualified, explained that the scaphoid has a strange blood supply and if not healed properly the bone can die from lack of oxygen.

You don't wan't that.

In reply to scrubmunched: yes, outside of my hand. It is now crocked

In reply to scrubmunched: Badly "twisted" my ankle a number of times. When I had an x-ray following an accident, the doc asked "When did you break that?" I didn't know!
scrubmunched 17 Oct 2007
In reply to Mark Kemball: I think alot of people think if you can move it, its not broken, or can't be serious.
I phoned A&E and they've asked me to go over after 9pm. And then I'll have to go back tomorrow for the cast if needed. I reckon I better get it done, that article freaked me out a bit.
In reply to scrubmunched: I snapped my arm and walked around for three weeks before I got it put in a cast.

Yeah, I've done that one too!

In reply to scrubmunched:

Think I broke a bone in my foot in March 2006, at the same time I turned my ankle over.

Of course, since I knew the ankle wasn't broken, I assumed all the swelling and bruising was down to that, and it was only when the ankle went down a bit that I realised that there was as separate area of pain along the top of my foot.

But by that time I was hobbling to work with the aid of a walking pole, taking about 45 mins for the 2.5 miles, so I didn't bother getting the foot x-rayed...

Did mine and after 3 odd months of being in plaster had no movement at the end, had to go and see the foundry climbing physio for help even now have 50 percent movement in it and very little feeling in half of the hand. Harborough limestone bites

20 years ago I fell and hurt my left wrist.
A trip to the hospital and an x-ray later and I was told it was just a sprain and all would be well.
4 weeks later I went back still in pain and a second X-ray showed that I had broken a bone in my wrist and from reading the web site in the link above it is a pretty safe bet that it was my scaphoid that I broke.
After 4 weeks it was apparently too late to do anything about it as it was well on the way to healing quite well on its own but the doc did say it wasn’t quite right (but not bad enough to warrant an operation) would probably have problems with it for the rest of my days.

He was bang on the money.
I have to strap it up from time to time. Normally only 3 or 4 times a year lasting from 2 days to a couple of weeks and I have to be careful of any activity that bends my hand back.
Sex in the missionary position (I have to support my self on a fist and keep my wrist straight) , Mantel shelving and pushing off holds on a climb and mountain biking are 3 things that particularly aggravate it.

In reply to scrubmunched: fractured my distal radius around 4 years ago now. It was undisplaced which was good. Surgeon decided not to put it in plaster and for me to just use one of those velcro splint things. The immobility that a plaster would've provided would've been less painful (it was bloody sore!!!) but on the other hand i wouldn't have got back to work on light duties after 5 weeks or back to climbing after 8. I only had 1 physio session basically because of the lack of plaster although physio did reckon atleast a week or 2 might've been good re pain. Have to say i'm really glad the surgeon made that choice for me.

Sorry to hear about your scaphoid - it's an awkward little bone and i really don't know anything about how well it heals with or without plaster. Lots of luck

In reply to scrubmunched:

dunno where the scaphoid is but I broke a bone in my hand (the one in my right hand that meets my little finger) and that was left to heal without a cast - seems ok now but maybe doesn't feel as strong as the one on my left hand sometimes

In reply to scrubmunched: I went to the local casualty dept after injuring my hand. Locum doc there decided as it didn’t appear to be hurting enough, it couldn’t be broken. He took an X-ray just in case. A few weeks later they called me back to casualty because they’d reviewed the x-ray and noticed I’d broken a finger. Back I went, only to be told it appeared to be healing OK without any support.

It still slightly bent and twinges at times but I figure isn’t any worse than if it had been strapped up.

In reply to scrubmunched: I broke my scaphoid bone in 2002 and two separate doctors told me that I would need an operation and probably a plate inserting; an appointment for the operation was made. Then, after reading a lot about it on the internet, I sought the advice of a wrist specialist who informed me that I didn't need an operation at all. I did, however, spend three months in plaster. Once the plaster was removed I was back climbing within two weeks, though it took a further year to get back to where I had been.

I broke it falling about a foot off the end of the Pinnacle Traverse at Froggatt.

In reply to scrubmunched:

I broke a wrist bone 30 years ago, playing football. Believing then as now in giving all branches of the medical profession as wide a berth as possible, I didn't seek any treatment. The resultant weakness has been more of a nuisance than a problem, but in the last few years the thumb, fore and middle fingers of that hand have been getting increasingly prone to numbness - my theory is that an adhesion on the fracture is constricting a blood vessel - so I may have to abandon the habit of a lifetime and consult a quack before they turn gangrenous and drop off.

Yes. 3 Times. If I can't scratch I go slowly, inexorably berserk.
I VERY strongly advise you to leave the sodding thing ON!
Removing that cast can frequently prove to be an irrevocable and painful mistake.

Mark my words: you will regret it if you do so.

In reply to Jonny Tee 69:

That was quite possibly your scaphoid.

I know at least 4 people who have broken that bone (some more than once) - one had a cast, the other 3 didn't. Varying degrees of success either way. I think 'youth' was the winner in their healing, rather than whether a pot was fitted or not...

I thought scaphoid was on the thumb side! Why would you get pain on the little finger side in this case@?

No, the scaphoid sits under your thumb in your wrist.

> I know at least 4 people who have broken that bone (some more than once) - one had a cast, the other 3 didn't. Varying degrees of success either way.

You're thinking of a 'boxers fracture' which is a break of the small finger metacarpal bone.

Very difficult to cast. I've done it twice ittin people and let it heal itself both times. Can still ache now in the winter when it's cold.

Nah, it's more of a poultice really.
Anyway how can I get plastered when YOU polished off the entire bottle! tsk. ; )
