I think sleeping in a particularly large puddle was probabvly the highlight for me... : )

In reply to lummox:

Don't know if 'enjoy' is the right word... but I had a good time.

Hadn't done much training, and I found B and much bigger step up from C than I'd been expecting. Think I counted 33km/1800m day 1, and 31km/1200m day 2, so it's little wonder that I can hardly move, have some horrendous blisters, and 3 purple toenails... Managed our target of top half with some places to spare, so reasonably happy with the result.

Warm and comfy night's sleep - not sure I'd have managed day 2 without the thermarest. Good call there.

Must get fit before next year!

It was my first one this year, short score, I really enjoyed it.

We were lucky with our camping spot as we missed all the ground water seepage (or gushing as it seemed to be on the other side of the wall!), there seemed to be plenty of people wringing out their sleeping bages yesterday morning. We managed to be undercover for most of the rain - yay!

Overall, very enjoyable but need to be fitter and a better able to estimate judge the whole time/distance thing next year - we were 16 minutes late coming in yesterday
OP lummox 29 Oct 2007
In reply to caroleb: don`t worry- I`m supposed to be "experienced" at MMs and came in 8 mins late on day 1 : )
In reply to lummox: I loved it....when was it?
Anita 29 Oct 2007
In reply to lummox: Ace - great fun
Nice inside-of-clouds views on Sat then stunningly clear on Sun. Great to see what we'd missed the day before.
Overnight camp was a bit of a quagmire, but we got off lightly just waking up a few times during the night with the sound of the wind. I managed not to be late either day which is a first, though maybe slightly underestimated what we oculd do on Sun and perhaps should have picked up another 15 points, hey ho. Still generally happy.
What a lovely area as well, some pretty precipitous grassy slopes.

In reply to lummox: An Owl and a Blade together couped up in a tent for the best part of 17 hours... and we didn't kill each other. Still, managed to go through a Best Ever of every possible music category, picked our favourite Home Nations England side without any Englishman, discovered that pissing in my hot chocolate cup was preferable to braving the maelstrom, and once more can sing the culinary praises of Decathlon rehydrated shepherds pie. On top of that, we quite enjoyed the yomping and are utterly delighted to have finished in the middle third of the Medium Score, Blade being a MM virgin and all that. Fabulous. Utterly fabulous.

In reply to lummox:

We had a great OMM. It was our first score class and we made the classic mistake of letting ambition overcome ability by disappearing off over the hills for a 50-pointer with two hours to spare on the first day. This cost us 110 penalty points (ouch).

We had a great night's sleep thanks to lessons learned on previous MMs: take decent bivi bags to keep sleeping bags dry and make sure that you have at least one unit of alcohol per person per waking hour to kill the time. Half a bottle of brandy and a strip of Ibuprofen each saw us sleep through till the piper struck up 10 hrs later. Storm? what storm?

We fared much better on the second day with our tactics and gained 90 places to see us finish an also-ran 115th in the Medium Score. Once again we failed to meet any ukc'rs but everyone looks the same on these things anyway! See y'all next year when it will be in England or Wales (so they said at the prizegiving).

I can also walk much better on the day after the OMM than I could last year so there is a reason to train for these things...
 Tonyfryer 29 Oct 2007
In reply to lummox:

Spend a cold wet night sleeping in a puddle lying on my back with legs crossed so only one leg got wet. Also didn't drink much at overnight camp as I didn't want to get out of the tent to go to toilet. Just as well really as I know of people who slept in them.

Did enjoy the running as it meant I was warm and wet instead of cold and wet.

First OMM but managed 27th in B class. Thanks to my partner running me into the ground.

Roll on next year! Further south apparently?

In reply to lummox:

no training and total lack of ambition and gammy ankle saw us 86th
on day 1 medium score almost 4 mins to spare, pretty good for us

Campsite was 'fun' stayed dry though and warmish. no socialising and
i pity the poor buggers still on the hill at 8.

Day 2 was lovely but serere lack of effort in ignoring the obvious last control (CX)
when we had time (just) but no motivation (or legs) cost us 20 places finishing 106 overall

fellow competitor spotting in motorway services is always fun after these events
(LAMM etc) but some people make it too easy wearing event t-shirts.

can't walk far today though

In reply to lummox:

As Harry already said we came in the middle third of middle score - a major achievement for myself as I've never done a fell run in my life (let alone a MM!). God, it was hard though. there were times when you had to dig real deep into the inner soul to get up to another check-point.

I just loved the cameraderie (sp?) involved, most people had an encouraging word as you passed them on the hill.

Already looking forward to my next one!

ps - where can I buy a mug? they'd all sold out when I finished :¬(

Sounds all too familiar Duncan. My first OMM, certainly won't be the last. My mate lost his glasses, right at the start on day one. Navigation was then all my responsibility. Finished 77th Med score.

In reply to lummox: It was great, still knackered, I am pleased to have finished the elite for the first time. next year i'll have to do some training.... At least I got my money's worth!
Etak 31 Oct 2007
In reply to Tonyfryer: beat you by one minute i think we were 26th in the B (also due to my partner duning me in to the ground)

was glad of a decent tent on the saturday nigth - also tried vasleining my feet for the fist time on MM nd made a big different - no real blisters (you know the sort with open sores that weep blood and pus for days after you've finnished0 and only a slightly un nerving slippy shoe feel to put up with

as for enjoy it ... well after 3 days recovering it is begining to seem like it ight have been fun

Absolutely, I was glad we had a proper tent, too - did you see people in the morning trying to wring out their sleeping bags...?

I was fine by Monday night so I obviously wasn't trying as hard as last year, or maybe I've got a better baseline since last year!

Congrats to Heike on finishing the Elite!

Thank you! It did go on a bit...

48th in the long score
We ought to retire now, as we'll never do that well again, if there were a Very Long Score we'd move up to that. But I don't thuink I can persuade my partner to try Elite instead, she has more sense than that.
 Heike 31 Oct 2007
In reply to Simon Caldwell:
Well done on the 48th!

BTW...are you implying I have no sense

In reply to lummox: Having competed before and come in last year top 10 in B class, i was horrified to find my 1st score class result down in the 200's.. over ambition and failing to see how naff and slow the terrain would be we went for a biggy and came in an hour and 37 late... 197 points deducted on day 1.. gutting as if we'd missed that stupid 60 we'd of been on time and rich for points!! Fairly disheartened on sunday we went out for a stroll and just picked up a few bits on the way but managed to bump our places up by 80 or so.. So what did i learn!
- Never be too ambitious
- Must train for next one as its crap if you're not being competitive
& i prefer climbing!

In reply to Mattyk:

Had similar tactical problems to you on day 1. We were a lot more competitive on Day 2 and pulled back 90-odd places. You're right about preferring climbing but I ran in to work today (10km) and feel much better about life again.

Anyone doing the Dark and White MM near Macclesfield on Sunday? I was going to go solo but if anyone is after a partner... (www.darkandwhite.co.uk )

I'm doing it Duncan with my girlfriend. See you there.

We're supposed to be, but it depends on whether my achilles is still swollen
 Nevis-the-cat 01 Nov 2007
In reply to lummox:

I enjoyed it immeasurably, from the comfort of my garage and turbo trainer.

The first one I have missed since 1992.

It was the first time I have ever found myself heading in November with a limp or bergen rash.
OP lummox 01 Nov 2007
In reply to Nevis-the-cat: you must find someone to break next year. Only a small but annoying blister to show this year. Fine when riding to and from work but a b*gger when I put me rock shoes on.

Oh and a damp sleeping bag from camping in a mere.
 Nevis-the-cat 01 Nov 2007
In reply to lummox:

Marc C has PTSD from last year, and the partner he year before, an ex marine fooked off to the Antarctic on a jolly rather than face it again.

I have also broken Nidderdale's brother in law and a footpath builder from Ambleside on my various attempts. Only mate Gerald Monkeyboy Lee has survived - including the 1998 Howling howgills and the year after. He is however, a Geordie with only one functioninig brain cell (think Tammy Knight's Ice climber) and has the cardio vascular system of reindeer.

So what are they like? I've only ever run in long races in Scotland and the Lakes. It seems a good forecast which is the main thing!
 Simon Caldwell 02 Nov 2007
In reply to Duncan I:
Navigation is easy (about Red standard orienteering, ie almost all controls next to paths), so favours strong runners over string navigators (just getting my excuses in early in case we enter!)
Given that they have to keep to rights of way when not on CROW land, they did a very good job in the last one of avoiding too much in the way of stiles, gates, and the like.

Ta for the excuse - I see what you mean about the strong runners! I was going flat out for three hours and still didn't make the top half of my group.

Missed you again! Maybe on the next LAMM?

In reply to lummox:
I am beginning to wish I did it. Missed it for the first time since 98. I did think of you all on Saturday night as I drank my wine in a nice pub in N. Wales.
Done all the LAMMs though and hopefully they will continue. I have to say I prefer them.

You scored 10 points more than we did! But we managed to win our group, it helps being in a small class

We'll be on the next Dark & White too, on December 4th.

Good to meet you and Duncan yesterday. Cracking event wasn't it?

In reply to lummox: My mate's 6 month old son developed screaming diarrhoea the day before so weekend leave was cancelled....

Hence dropped out for the first time since 1998. Quite disappointed but that's life I guess. Sounded like a good area and the photos of sunday morning look lovely. Congratulations to everyone who finished, saturday night sounded grim (and I must admit to being slightly relieved we didn't have to sit it out in a subkilo tent)

I've challenged my OMM/LAMM partner to go mano y mano as solos to see who really is the best out of the two of us. A pint is riding on it. See you in December!
