In reply to Mick Ryan - Editor - UKC:

The Castle Climbing centre in London have a monthly boulder ladder competition where it is the most improved climber that wins a prize. Quite fun to test your grade out even if you don't submit your form as the 20 routes increase with difficulty up to around 6b english.

In reply to Mick Ryan - Editor - UKC: A bit late for this winter but Nottingham always run a bouldering comp the second friday in every month October to Feb. Three levels: fun (to Uk 5a) intermediate (4b to 6a) and open (from 5b to 6c). Problems are generally sustained so feel hard for the grades (esp 5b upwards).

In reply to Offwidth: On the subject of Nottingham as it may be the hardest graded regular comp in the country (in the open the UK grades given are usually sustained and often "traditional"). Who's is the easiest graded?

I've always found Nottingham grades to be fairly hard on the bouldering side (not so much on the lead/toproping walls). I think this is a good thing, it's a training facility and it's good that things seem easier out side, rather than the other way round. It seems more sensible for people to be able to think they'll struggle on a 4c than expecting to be able to onsight a 5b (E1 or whatever!).

Apparently they'd been getting some complaints and some of the climbs are easier this month :-0

Nope, pretty much same as always, ie a 5a problem and two 5b problems I still haven't done. I love the place as the 4c to 5c problems I can go at are often brilliant and it keeps me grounded (sometimes literally). The comps are part of my training and I dont want ego massaging in that. I do think December '08 was the hardest intermediate ever in the 4c to 5b range (As member number 9 I've done all the comps, consistently finishing somewhere near the bottom of the intermediate league).

The Climbing Works have had a couple of rounds of the Berghaus bouldering league already - the next one is on Friday 25th Jan. £100 cash prize for the first person to climb the bonus problem.

In reply to Mick Ryan - Editor - UKC: Just been to the MCC and the grades of the comp routes are a bit odd. The 7c was more like 7b, the 8a felt more like 7c, the 7b and 7a were about right.
