"The world's largest compass rose, drawn on the desert floor at Edwards Air Force Base in California, United States. Painted on the playa near Dryden Flight Research Center, it is inclined to magnetic north and is used by pilots for calibrating heading indicators."

doesnt this suffer innacuracies as the magnetic declination varies?

so that they have to redraw it every so often?

Doesn't really matter seeing as their smart bombs go where ever they please.

In reply to JackKeen: That is strange, I wonder if its a mistake in Wikipedia, If it pointed to True North they could allow for the changing declination?
 Bruce Hooker 25 Jan 2008
In reply to JackKeen:

They keep the rose fixed and just change the rest of the world to cater for magnetic changes.

ta mate, wow so not top secret then.

may be its not for flight training but as a landing assistance to aliens

In reply to JackKeen:

How does it work then? I know magnetic north is different from North North but none of the lines on it line up with the google earth compass.

Fascinating stuff. You can see the 7.5 mile runway which they use to land the Space shuttle.

Actually painted by Chris Columbus and his crew to ensure no-one made a similar mistake of 'discovering' America again....
