hello all

whilst at the gym last night I saw a programme on TV that had some chap climbing somewhere in the jungle, and various creepy crawlies, and - how exciting - a man trying to get some footage of a strange creature as it lolloped and snuffled across the plain. It took a while for me to work out what it was as it had long fluffy legs, a huge plume of a tail - and then it turned round and was blatantly an anteater.

I was talking about it with my bf later on, which gave him the opportunity to roll out one of the worst jokes I've ever heard, but neither of us was sure why anteaters have hugely fluffy tails. Anyone know?

In reply to Tall Clare: Because they can?

S/he was very cool though.

In reply to Tall Clare: This page http://www.sandiegozoo.org/animalbytes/t-anteater.html suggests they use them as a portable blanket!

In reply to Chris F:

wikipedia suggests it's so they can use it as a blanket... hmmm.

apparently their hair is very flammable.

I can only rememeber the punchline, about which I'm still shaking my head at the rubbishness...
In reply to Liam M: And this one http://www.independent.com/news/2007/dec/22/weird-zoology/ suggests they use them as an umbrella.

I can't get over the size of the thing, I know it was a giant anteater but relative to what? That thing looked the size of a pony!

Is a pangolin also known as a spiny anteater?

They are my favourites.

It could be defense - it makes it look a lot bigger than it really is.

Cool animals though, saw one in Bolivia
OP Tall Clare 14 Aug 2008
In reply to Blue Straggler:

yes.

they're the only two mammals without teeth, apparently, but the giant anteater has a 2ft tongue.

In reply to Tall Clare:

I might have to find a pattern to see if I can knit a giant anteater...
 Frank4short 14 Aug 2008
In reply to Tall Clare: What would be really cool would be if you could knit 2 giant anteaters. A mother & baby. Then you could sew the baby onto the mothers back & it'd be really cool looking just like in the pictures.

In reply to Tall Clare:

well the big thing is their shit is cuboid

I thought when I saw it either that they had a odd shaped arse or the had a great sense of humour and would have a dump, shape them into cubes with paws, hide in the bushes and wait for us to come along and be bamboozled, chuckling away

Didn't Captain Corelli have one of those? (sorry lame joke, but conjures up a great script and some great scenes involving Nicholas Cage with one on a leash).
