In reply to Rosie A:

Summit via the BMC, also you save a good 30-50% off some insurance for BMC membership.

You realise you may get life if you claim on it after you have killed the insured?

Only thing is the insurers they use want to know everything about you including inside leg measurement! Most through insurance info I have ever given.

Got a good deal, 100k life cover for me, 90k joint mortgage cover and 800/500 (me / partner) income protection, for 47 per month. The only thing I am not covered for is any time off work due to hayfever or nasal problems for my income prot.

I'm an insurance underwriter and see a lot of the apps we get where climbing is disclosed. The majority are not rated, it should be just higher grade and at altitude (above 4000m). It's worth getting quoted by the cheapest mainstream as well as the specialists as though they might claim they are not rating you, the extra risk is added into the base premiums. So, a joint policy with a non-climbing spouse in particular could end up costing you more - the spouse could in effect be paying for climbing cover they don't need.

In reply to Rosie A: While you're thinking about it, consider "critical illness" insurance. We'd much rather not have been in a position to claim, but it's just cleared our mortgage and taken off a lot of pressure at a difficult time.

In reply to Mark Kemball:

Yes I'm thinking about that too. I've recently had to come to terms with my own mortality, and my whole life picture is undergoing something of a renaissance.

Thanks all, I've signed up with Summit, it's the most reasonable quote I've had and got to speak at some length to a very nice man about my complete lack of any medical history (luckily he didn't ask about my driving record!)
